Ya sabemos quiénes somos, [...] y que tenemos un pasado, un presente y un futuro.

Hace cincuenta años un grupo de artistas vascos escribió estas palabras en su manifiesto para reivindicar el lugar que les correspondía en la historia. Al echar la vista atrás dichas palabras parecen obvias pero en el momento en el que se escribieron el grupo Gaur ni siquiera existía todavía. Sugiere que la escritura no solo describe la historia, sino que también tiene el poder de crearla. Para entender plenamente las implicaciones de esta correlación entre historia y escritura, de este poder de alterar el statu quo y realinear el futuro, es necesario en primer lugar considerar el origen de la escritura misma. Para ello nos referiremos a "Lección de escritura", un capítulo de las memorias del antropólogo francés Lévi-Strauss.

“We all already know who we are, […] and that we have a past, a present and a future.”

Fifty years ago a group of Basque artists wrote these words in their manifesto in order to claim their rightful place in history. Looking back, these words seem self-evident. When they were written, however, the Gaur Group did not even exist yet. It suggests that writing does not just describe history, but that it also has the power to create it. To fully understand the implications of this correlation, of this power to disrupt the status quo and realign the future, we should first consider the origin of writing itself. For this, we will turn to “The Writing Lesson”, a chapter from the memoirs of the French anthropologist Lévi-Strauss.
